The Swan Story - The Flood - What Happened?

Jon Cowley, House Manager, recalls the the devastation reeked across the southern Lake District in 2009...

"I was wearing waders in the restaurant and the water was up to my thighs," Jon says. "The floods came through the floorboards and poured in through both the front and back doors. Everything on the ground floor was ruined – we couldn't salvage a thing. With the water table rising, The Swan Hotelwater from the swimming pool was pushed up and spilled out into reception and throughout the lounges and pub, mingling with the floods as guests were evacuated to the upper levels."

The view of Newby Bridge which gives you access to the Swan Hotel. The bridge was put under severe pressure structurally and a specialist team of divers were called upon to investigate any damage which may have occurred. Thankfully it got the all clear. Coincidently if the bridge was condemned our stone mason who built the feature fireplace in the hotel reception was approached by the engineers to be involved with both demolition and rebuild of the bridge. Again this proves Willian UK were the right company for the job at hand.

As you can see the hedge which is two feet high looks more like a reed. A place for the ducks to sit and watch us look calm on top, when we were really paddling like mad underneath!
